THOMAS GOODWIN ALEXANDER

On Sunday, October 28, 2012, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of Amy Alexander; father of Lyle S. Alexander (Lenora) of Disputanta, VA, Helen R. Nelson (Timothy) of Sharpsburg, MD and Carol A. Fredericks (Alan) of Clinton, MD. He is also survived by sister Alice King (Thomas) and Martha Alexander; step-children Cecelia Tillman, Catherine Yanacek (James) and Michael Hoey; 12 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Eleanor Carol Harkness Alexander, sister Jennie Hodgson, and step-son Daniel Hoey. “Tom” Alexander was born in Washington, DC on September 6, 1928. He graduated from Hyattsville High School in 1946 and received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Maryland and a Master’s in Physical Chemistry from George Washington University. He served in the US Army from 1950 – 1952 and worked for the Food and Drug Administration in Washington DC from 1952 – 1989, where he served as Supervisory Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemist. He was active in the Association of Official Analytical Chemists and the Sigma-Xi chapter of the American Chemical Society. He was a dedicated and active member of Oxon Hill United Methodist Church, volunteering in many capacities. He spent decades as a volunteer in the community, giving of his time for Prince George’s County schools, Meals-on-Wheels, the Oxon Hill Food Pantry, and most notably, the Boy Scouts, where he served as Committee Chairman, Badge Counselor, Unit Commissioner and Assistant District Commissioner for the Two Rivers District. He was the recipient of numerous awards for both his professional and volunteer work, including Boy Scout’s Silver Beaver award. Memorial Service at Oxon Hill United Methodist Church, 6400 Livingston Road, Oxon Hill, MD, on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions to the Boy Scouts of America, 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane, Irving, TX 75038.
