HERBERT J. HARRIS
On Saturday, May 18, 2013, Herbert J. Harris, age 89, of Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Buffalo, NY. Born May 20, 1923 in Rochester, NY. Husband of the late Mary Frances (Fran); father of Ann Lister (Mark), Patricia Kern (Dabney), James W. Harris (Karen), Steve Harris (Shaun), and the late Edward M. Harris; grandfather of Megan and Kevin (Genevieve) Lister; James and Jennifer Harris; Jack and Liz Kern; and Timothy and Ashley Harris. He was a combat veteran having served in WWII as a forward observer for Field Artillery. He graduated from the University of Alabama, class of 1950 with a Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering; with a Certificate in Business Administration in 1958. He worked as an Industrial Engineer for several companies in the Buffalo area and he was the lead engineer in developing the first refueling hose of jet aircraft in 1954 at Hewitt Robbins Inc. He worked for several civilian government agencies in the Washington area and started the first Industrial Engineering organization at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He was also the Chief Industrial Engineer for the Department of Agriculture. He was President of Niagara Frontier Chapter, Buffalo, NY, and President of the Washington Chapter of Industrial Engineers. He enjoyed playing sports: Four wall handball, tennis, and was an avid golfer and bridge player. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Grace Church, 15661 Norbeck Blvd., Silver Spring, on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
